Diverse groups share Basin Park

EUREKA SPRINGS—Saturday’s showdown in Basin Park turned out to be a relatively peaceful intermingling of diverse elements of the region’s culture—very fitting for Diversity Weekend. With only a minor exception or two, the Christian motorcycle groups and the gays in pink hats and rainbow attire shared the park, some casual conversation, the music, and the sunny day without much incident. Other visitors in the park seemed oblivious to the potentially troublesome conditions.
But it never would have become volatile, according to Pastor Mark Kiser, president of America Asleep kNOw More and leader of the Christian rally, who said his group had no intention of being confrontational and would have gone elsewhere if there was a problem—they were not here to protest anything.
“God intended for us to be here, so whatever happens will be right,” he said in an interview Friday evening. “Our ultimate goal in coming to Eureka Springs is to lift up the name and person of Jesus Christ.”
Kiser’s group was met in town by other Christians, mostly motorcyclists, who came from all around the region to support Kiser’s effort to “dynamite Christians out of the pew and take our faith out of the four walls of the church.”
While Christians spread out literature for those interested, gays passed out pink hats and posed for a picture in the park.
A lady in a pink hat who preferred to remain anonymous remarked that she wished “They would just leave us alone,” referring to the Christians. But others in pink hats engaged in conversation with them, and seemed willing to share the weekend in the park with them.
With the rock music of the Off the Wall Band playing from the bandshell Saturday at noon, Christians and gays gradually comingled through efforts of those like John McCann of Bikers for Christ whose engaging smile quickly broke down barriers, and Purelight Ministries who were passing out free bottles of ice cold water in the sweltering heat.
The Christian group ignored Trella Laughlin’s chanting of “You’re evil people, go home.” And a young man performing a dance with red flags who identified himself as a Wiccan said all Christians do is talk.
But within about an hour most of the pink hats and rainbows had drifted off to other environs.
McCann said he would like to see more Christians step up and be more vocal about what they want for our town.
Freedom Seekers Ron Hutchins, Don Bapst, and Don Farley of Blue Eye said they were here to share a message of hope to those who are struggling with drug and alcohol addictions.
And David and Leisa Price of Gravette, members of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, are concerned by the direction the city is going. “It’s going to hurt this place,” said Price. “I’ve talked to many of the shopkeepers and they say they have noticed a steady decline in business over the past year.”
Mark Kiser, who is pastor of a nondenominational church called Pillar of Iron in Springfield, started America Asleep kNOw More with the goal of waking America up and helping restore the nation to its foundations on Jesus Christ. Rallies such as the one in Basin Park, he said, are one way they attempt to do so—“to proclaim Jesus Christ as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.”
They also hold rallies called “Shake the Nation.” One is scheduled in the Springfield area for Aug. 24-25.
After watching the news and seeing that the city council had passed the Domestic Partnership Registry (DPR) in Eureka Springs, Kiser said he would no longer feel comfortable bringing his family of seven kids here for vacation and spending money to support a town whose city council promotes the DPR. They have spent many vacations here, and he and his wife, Susanna, spent their honeymoon here.
As an important member of Kiser’s team, Gregory Thompson, ex-Superintendent of Schools in Humansville, Mo., works closely with him in his rallies. Thompson was fired by the School Board in Humansville in March 2004 for posting the Ten Commandments on the wall of the school, having a Bible on his desk, and praying at a school event, but the people of the city supported him and voted him onto the School Board in Sept. of that year.
Also working closely with Kiser is Jim Carroll, leader of the Jericho Riders, a Christian motorcycle ministry begun on Dec. 25, 2006 that tries to share the love of Jesus wherever they go, and sometimes gets involved in controversial issues.
Contrary to rumors around town that have sometimes swelled the number of Jericho Riders to mythological proportions, Carroll said there are not 500, but only him and his wife, Linda, for the time being.
They have been in Eureka Springs every Saturday for the last six weeks “talking to folks and getting the feel of the town,” and he senses there is “a big desire for change here.”
He and Linda have spent a lot of time in Eureka, including at the Fire on the Mountain motorcycle rally held recently at the Great Passion Play. In his travels he hears from many people who have said they don’t want to come here any more, and that’s a concern to him because he doesn’t sense the DPR represents the majority of the people here.

Hate crimes in Eureka Springs

This past weekend we sank a little lower into the gutter of hate and deceit.  Our front-page photo shows the cowardly acts of hate perpetrated against the Penn Memorial First Baptist Church (Christians) on Spring Street in Eureka Springs this past Saturday AM.  Black spray paint was used to write the words” F--- You Christians” on one corner and “Jesus Doesn’t Save” on another.
Do we teach our young people to hate resulting in such things?  I say teach because I don’t believe these (presumed) young people who committed this act of vandalism have lived long enough to develop such deep hatred through life experiences of their own that would cause them to do such things. We adults can take a bow for spreading this hate to our young. We have local publications that glory in it and local Internet boards that thrive on it and spread it as thick and as far as they can. We adults breed hate as though there isn’t enough to go around in this world and our community already. Look at the words chalked in on a sidewalk café sign saying, “Jericho Riders not welcome”(a man and his wife).

Slander and hate is spewed and disrespect is commonplace for those who happen to have a different life philosophy than you. We make jokes about manger theft time after time and think it is great when it makes nationwide coverage, then watch as the Eureka Kids facility is continually broken into, and we wonder why. Sometimes we may not intend to foster hate, but our actions produce reactions and hate snowballs into violence.
We need to grow up, people.
Cowardly acts such as this sidewalk vandalism are commonplace in Eureka. These are the kinds of things we teach our kids. They grow up with this in their minds thinking that it is OK to destroy property that doesn’t belong to them, OK to slander and curse another, OK and normal to sneak and commit cowardly acts if the victim doesn’t agree with you for one reason or another. We teach them this because many of us are spoiled cowards ourselves without moral fiber and little to no respect for others. We encourage this behavior because we do or say nothing when it is shoved in our neighbor’s face, but let it come home to roost and listen to us whine. Don’t make waves, right? Call it karma or whatever, but we all reap what we sow in one-way or another, and the harvest is upon us, our reaping time is here and now.
So what is next? I can easily see an act of sidewalk hate vandalism such as this escalating into violent behavior like we saw when the Hells Angels were in town. Do we think these nice motorcycle boys that plunged knives into and clubbed their peers were not taught some similar life lessons that we teach our young people now?
When you want violence in a town, welcome it. When you want your young people to vandalize and slander, teach them to hate. When you want them to be thieves, make a joke of it, and when violence erupts in the streets, just remember who the teachers are. So now the big question is, what can we do to change things?

Americans regarding the threat of Islamofascism

Dear Jim,

I just completed the 2007 National Security Issue Preference Survey of the American Congress for Truth (ACT). ACT is rapidly moving forward in their mission to educate and mobilize Americans regarding the threat of Islamofascism. To help plan the rest of the year, they want to know what Americans think about issues that affect our national security and our nation’s ability to deal with Islamic terrorism. I thought you might like to take a few minutes to fill out this short questionnaire online.

Basin Park preachers

By Al Pryor

This past weekend the Jericho Riders Motorcycle Club obtained a city permit to have preachers speak from noon until 2 p.m. in Basin Park. This was done in conjunction with the Shake The Nation rally held the previous Friday night at First Christian Church, Eureka.
Shortly after the preachers began speaking, hecklers and protesters made themselves known. One man tried to physically stop the preaching.
Alderwoman Kathy Harrison tried to stop it with police help when the speakers produced a permit. Harrison was told by police that it was a legal gathering and could not be stopped. Later she and her son showed up with signs protesting the preaching. When asked if this was something a councilperson should be involved in, Harrison stated she was doing this as a private citizen.  A short time later Harrison while displaying signs was confronted by some of the preachers. It has been said that Harrison was verbally attacked but I saw no evidence of that.   It seems the main complaint was that the preachers were being too loud; however, there was no amplified equipment being used. All in all, the event went peaceably with onlookers coming, listening, and going.

 NEW PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION

ARTICLE I:

You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but No one is guaranteeing anything.

ARTICLE II:

You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is Based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc.; But the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.

ARTICLE III:

You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool Manufacturer to make you and all your relatives

"We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights."
We the sensible people of the United States , in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and other Liberal bed-wetters. independently wealthy.

You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the Creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes. (This one is my pet peeve...get an education and go to work .. don't expect everyone else to take care of you!)

ARTICLE V:

You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in

public health care.

ARTICLE VI:

You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.

ARTICLE VII:

You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.

ARTICLE VIII:

You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful. (AMEN!)

ARTICLE IX:

You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

ARTICLE X:

This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came from! (lastly....)

ARTICLE XI:

You do not have the right to change our country's history or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in God. And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, and if you are uncomfortable with it, TOUGH!!!!
